What First-Time Permanent Jewelry Clients Worry About Most

Trying something new — especially something called permanent — naturally comes with questions. Most first-time permanent jewelry clients come in excited, but with a few common worries running through their head. The good news is that these concerns are normal, expected, and easy to address when you know what to expect.

At Bonded by Gigi, we walk people through these questions every single day.

Will It Fit Comfortably?

Fit is the number one concern for first-time permanent jewelry clients.

Permanent jewelry should never feel tight, restrictive, or annoying. It also shouldn’t be so loose that it slides excessively or catches on things. That balance matters.

We always start with a test fit before anything is welded. The chain is adjusted until you’re completely comfortable and happy with how it feels, and it also has to pass our fit standards based on experience. The goal is room for natural movement and swelling, without excess slack.

Fit is not rushed — and it’s never finalized until it feels right.

How Long Does Permanent Jewelry Last?

Permanent jewelry is designed for long-term, continuous wear. It can last for years!

When properly fit and cared for, it’s meant to be worn every day — sleeping, showering, traveling, and living your life. The longevity depends on lifestyle, chain choice, and fit, but it’s not something designed to be temporary or disposable.

The “permanent” part refers to how it’s worn, not that it can never be adjusted or removed.

What If It Breaks?

This is a very common worry — and an important one.

Permanent jewelry is not indestructible, and that’s actually a safety feature. If it ever gets caught or snagged, it’s designed to give way rather than pull forcefully against your skin.

If a piece breaks, it doesn’t mean anything went wrong. And it’s not the end of the jewelry.

We always offer free rewelds, so the piece can be reattached without stress or added cost.

Will It Tarnish?

Another frequent question is what permanent jewelry is made of and how it holds up over time.

We offer gold-filled and sterling silver chain options. These are the most commonly used materials in the industry and are tarnish resistant. If you ever find it needs some extra shine, simply use a gentle dish soap, rinse and gently pat dry. We also offer all of our customers a complementary polishing cloth.

What If I Need an MRI?

This is a very common and very valid concern. Whether you need to remove your jewelry for your MRI is up to your medical provider.

With that said, if you ever need an MRI or a medical procedure that requires jewelry removal, permanent jewelry can be cut at the jump ring, which is the small round ring where it was welded. The chain stays intact and can be rewelded afterward.

We always offer free rewelds to our customers. Simply bring your chain in and have it put back on. No biggie!

Can I Go Through TSA With Permanent Jewelry?

Yes — you can go through TSA with permanent jewelry.

Permanent jewelry is worn just like any other fine jewelry and does not need to be removed for airport security. Many people travel regularly with their permanent jewelry without any issues.

Understanding the Process Helps Ease Nerves

A lot of first-time worries come from not knowing how permanent jewelry is actually applied.

Permanent jewelry is closed using micro-welding, not soldering. A small, controlled spark welds the chain together without touching your skin. We also place a protective vegan leather patch between the chain and your skin during the process.
